Improved beef production in central Vietnam
Project Name
Improved beef production in central Vietnam
Location
Quang ngai province
Objectives
Demand for beef products is rising in Vietnam, creating opportunities for income generation amongst smallholder farmers. Cattle rearing and finishing are considered the top priority for smallholders in Quang Ngai Province, however, knowledge on the role of on- and off-farm feed resources is limited.
Expected Outcomes:
Significant capacity building in the key Vietnamese partners will result from the project.
Activities:
Cataloguing available feeds and their nutritive characteristics will allow year-round feeding options to be developed and trialled for optimal feed interactions and finishing combinations. Field testing of the results and on-farm demonstrations will then be used, adopting a participatory approach. Regional and seasonal feed availability will be used to create appropriate feeding strategies.
Partners:
- Department of Primary Industries, Victoria, Australia
- Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry, Vietnam
- Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam
- Quang Ngai Rural Development Program, Vietnam
Beneficiaries:
Smallholders in Quang ngai province
Budget:
Aus$607,474
Start Date: 01 April 2004
End Date: 30 June 2007

Utilisation of local ingredients in commercial feeds for pigs
Project Name
Utilisation of local ingredients in commercial feeds for pigs
Location
HCM City, Tay ninh, Binh duong, Binh phuoc, Dong nai
Objectives, Activities & Outcomes
Pig production in Vietnam is an important industry for smallholder farmers, who supply 80 per cent of all pigs. The long-term viability of production is threatened by the high cost of feeds, most of which are imported. These high quality feeds are likely to continue to rise in price. The use of cheaper local feedstuffs is a viable solution, but is limited by a lack of knowledge of their suitability for pigs. This project aims to bridge the gap by assessing locally available protein and energy sources as potential components of commercial pig diets. On-farm assessments and other extension activities will share these results with the commercial and smallholder sectors.
Partners:
- Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, Animal Research Institute, Australia
- Institute of Agricultural Sciences of South Vietnam, Vietnam
- Southern Sub-Institute of Agricultural Engineering and Post-Harvest Technology, Vietnam
Beneficiaries:
Smallholder farmers in project areas.
Budget:
$399,999
Start Date: 01 April 2004
End Date: 30 June 2008

The epidemiology, pathogenesis and control of HPAI in ducks in Indonesia and Vietnam
Project Name
The epidemiology, pathogenesis and control of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in ducks in Indonesia and Vietnam
Location
HCM City, Tay ninh, Binh duong, Binh phuoc, Dong nai
Objectives, Activities & Outcomes
Bird Flu is a highly pathogenic virus infecting poultry and humans. A major pandemic is continuing in South East Asia, North Asia and eastern Europe where control of the disease in poultry is hampered by the lack of understanding of ducks as transmitters of the virus to chickens and to humans. Ducks may not always show signs of illness when infected with Bird Flu/HPAI. The objectives of this project are to determine the epidemiological and virus transmission characteristics of HPAI in intensive and small holder mixed duck production systems in Indonesia and Vietnam and to develop more effective control strategies. The priority of the objectives has been confirmed by ASEAN/FAO and the Australian Department of Agriculutre, Fisheries and Forestry. The objectives will involve both field and experimental activities. The Australian Biosecurity CRC and its partners, Australian Animal Health Laboratory/CSIRO Livestock Industries and University of Queensland will collaborate with the international partners. The Indonesian partners are the Department of Animal Health and the District Investigation Centre at Waites/Yogykarta, Directorate General of Livestock Services and the Research Institute for Veterinary Science in Bogor. Partners in Vietnam include the National Institute for Veterinary Research (Hanoi) and the Regional Animal Health Centre (Ho Chi Minh City). The results of this project will directly influence the national vaccination campaigns in both Vietnam and Indonesia and feed into an AusAID project on Emerging Zoonotic Diseases, ASEAN, FAO and OIE activities in the South East Asian region.
